Summary

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion, slows gastric emptying, and acts in the brain to reduce appetite. It has large, well-controlled Phase 3 trials for diabetes and chronic weight management, plus cardiovascular outcome data showing benefit in high-risk patients. GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting) are common but often manageable with slow dose titration. It is widely used in clinical practice under medical supervision.
