Summary

Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which set basal metabolic rate and support growth and neurodevelopment. It is commonly supplemented in pregnancy and in areas with low dietary iodine, and is also found in kelp and iodized salt. Both deficiency and excess can disrupt thyroid function, so dosing is best aligned with dietary intake and individual risk.
